Chesapeake Institute for Behavioral Health believes not just in helping individuals overcome difficulties but in helping individuals to thrive and live their best lives. Chesapeake Institute for Behavioral is a small specialty practice supporting people to get and stay healthy, recover from injury or illness, manage stress, move through trauma, and/or cope with acute and chronic health and medical conditions. Our founder, Dr. Teeters, specializes in working with and treating individuals with gastrointestinal disorders (e.g., IBS, Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis). Our expert and highly trained clinicians accommodate many psychological health needs and have expertise in treating anxiety, depression, OCD, and trauma. We also have expertise in LGBTQIA affirming care. We pride ourselves in tailoring up-to-date, evidence-based interventions to help efficiently and effectively address your unique concerns. APPROACH: Dr. Teeters is a health psychologist and offers a warm, compassionate, and non-judgmental therapeutic environment where clients can feel welcome and safe. This allows clients the opportunity to express themselves deeply and identify their authentic selves. Dr. Teeters has a positive and patient-centered approach and utilizes a biopsychosocial lens and believes every patient is unique and has different experiences and circumstances affecting them. Dr. Teeters' approach is individualized to each patient’s unique needs, strengths, and experiences, yet it is firmly rooted in the evidenced-based principles of CBT, ACT, Clinical Hypnosis, and Mindfulness. His approach to therapy is empathetic and personal. He takes a direct and active approach in treatment, and finds that humor can sometimes be a helpful tool in coping with life stressors. TRAINING AND EDUCATION: Dr. Teeters has trained clinically at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and at multiple traditional mental health practices in the D.C. region. He completed his internship at the Central Virginia Veterans Affairs Healthcare System in Richmond, Virginia. He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Capital Institute for Cognitive Therapy in Washington, D.C. Dr. Teeters is currently an adjunct professor of clinical psychology at The Chicago School in Washington, DC. He also previously worked for nearly a decade with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and graduated from the Johns Hopkins University with a Masters degree in Environmental Sciences and Policy. He then went on to receive his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, Washington, DC. COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT: Chesapeake Institute for Behavioral Health has partnered up with CarbonFund.org to ensure the work done by CIBH does not further exacerbate climate change. Dr. Teeters is also a member of the Society of Behavioral Medicine's Presidential Working Group on Human Behavior and Climate Change Mitigation, and conducts research on this area of interest. LICENSES: Dr. Teeters is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in Maryland (#06583), Virginia (#0810007570), Washington, DC (#PSY200001257), and Michigan (#6301018971). He is also able to see patients via telehealth in Florida (#TPPY1220) and all PSYPACT states (#9389).
